Lauren Nurse - Visual Artist

My most recent body of work is autobiographical. I am a gardener, a printmaker and researcher of the supernatural as an amplification of the natural. I am interested in all of the above because they invoke a level of human propitiation, a certain type of bargaining with the natural world, which reveals a somewhat naive (but sincere) belief that we can exert power over forces usually beyond our control.

Spells are about language, incantation and ritual. Gardening is about labour, patience and ritual. Printmaking is about surface, aesthetics and ritual. All of these practices, for me, involve some kind of relationship with the natural world, however uneasy. As such, much of my practice centers around the hybrid - an object or image that holds meaning on a number of levels.

I am currently represented by kwtcontemporary.com/, located in Toronto, Ontario.
